Chiều dài tuyến 21,87km. Dự kiến có khoảng 13 ga (1 trên cao và 12 ga ngầm) và 01 đề pô (chung đề pô với Tuyến số 1 tại phường Phú Chánh, TP Tân Uyên hoặc chung đề pô với Tuyến số 3 TP.HCM tại phường Hiệp Bình Phước, TP Thủ Đức).
Tuyến đi qua địa phận TP Thủ Dầu Một, TP Thuận An; đáp ứng năng lực chuyên chở từ 30.000 – 40.000 người/hướng/giờ, kết nối TP Thủ Dầu Một đến TP.HCM và các đô thị dọc tuyến đường sắt.
Dự án tuyến đường sắt số 2 được kỳ vọng sẽ góp phần giảm ùn tắc giao thông, nhất là khi Bình Dương sáp nhập với TP.HCM, đồng thời tăng cường kết nối thông suốt, thúc đẩy phát triển kinh tế – xã hội của TP.HCM mới sau sáp nhập.
